SPHG 712: Methods and Measures
Credit Hours: 2
Course Overview
This course is completed as part of the 14-credit integrated Core public health training program completed by all MPH students in UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health.
This course introduces epidemiologic concepts and how to describe population patterns of health, inequities and their determinants. You will focus on what to measure, how to measure it, whom to measure it in, and how to do so in ways that minimize bias. Assignments in the course will be designed for collaborative and active learning. Case studies, lab discussion and team projects will promote critical thinking and use of evidence-based reasoning.
The course frames MPH core concept integration as students apply concepts from multiple courses to a public health practice-related task — a comprehensive white paper describing a public health problem. Three assignments in this course will allow students to apply epidemiological concepts to their team project.
Academic Enrichment Program (Tutoring)
The SPH Academic Enrichment Program is available to provide supplementary tutoring for SPHG 712 at no cost to the students.
